Something From Nothing...Maybe

Why is there something instead of nothing? To which the late philosopher Sydney Morgenbesser had a classic response: “And if there were nothing? You'd still be complaining!"

So where did this something come from? I don't know, but I would like to frame the question.

We could take the easy way out and say it didn't come from anywhere. It has always existed. But that is pretty hard to wrap our head around. Everything we see now has a beginning, and we can explain its beginning, all except for everything. We don't know how It All began. It's a big mystery.

There's the Big Bang (better the Big Expansion, but that's not as exciting a phrase). But that just begs the question of where did the stuff for the Big Bang come from, and we're right back where we started.

So maybe something did come from nothing. Did it just appear? How? That's a mystery. And when, and why then instead of earlier or later? That's a mystery, too, if I ever heard one. And prior to that, where did the Nothing come from? How was there a state of nothing? This doesn't help us much, because now we have three mysteries. We're making it worse.

Well, there's a solution, fortunately. Just read your [insert holy book]. Our Supreme Being of choice did it. This entity, starting with nothing, made something and here we are. Wrap it up with a bow.

Except, the question of how the state of nothing came into being hasn't been answered, the question of how the SB created something out of nothing hasn't been answered in a way that every other fact about the world we live in gets answered, and in addition we have to explain how the SB got here, which is a fourth mystery.

We started with one mystery and now we have four. I don't think we're going in the right direction.

Oh, yes. If the SB can have always existed, which religions say it did, if one thing can have always existed, why can't two things have always existed, such as the SB and something?

I have two answers to the original problem. One is, "I don't know", which some people just don't want to admit is the right answer about a lot of things. The other answer is explained in a piece titled The Cat Theory of Origins.

You're welcome.
